I am the son of a retired 30+ year public school guidance counselor and teacher. The importance of education is something that was instilled in me at a very early age. My work with young people began in 1994 and has taken me from Fort Worth to Boston, MA to Austin to Alexandria, VA and back to Austin.

This work includes coordinating enrichment programs for underserved students in Fort Worth and Boston, MA through the Breakthrough Collaborative, teaching students from all over the nation in an immersion experiential civic education program with Close Up Washington, and national advocacy for young people living with disability at Epilepsy Foundation of America.

I was raised in the South, growing up in Arlington, TX, and educated in the North, earning a Bachelor’s in English from Skidmore College, and a Master’s in Ethics and Public Policy from Suffolk University.

I come from a family who believes strongly in two things:

1) To whom much is given, much is also expected.

2) If you see an opportunity to make things better for others, you do what you can to make things better for others.

These principles have guided me in both my work and my community service, including service in such roles as:

  • Austin ISD Close Up member

  • Commissioner for the Austin Community Development Commission

  • Rotary International Club Member (Austin), Club President (Westwood-Westview, MD)

  • NAACP Board Member (Arlington, TX & Randallstown, MD)

  • Board Member for Well Aware, an Austin based international non-profit which finds, digs and helps maintain wells for villages in Africa in desperate need of life-giving water

When I’m not working or serving in the community, I love spending time cooking and enjoying biopic and romantic comedy movies with my non-binary partner, Candace, who I met in high school, and our two loving and rambunctious dogs, Jack and Falkor (Candace’s Service Dog in Training).

Candace, a former Anderson Mill Elementary and Grisham Middle School student, is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine with a specialty in Neurology and a primary focus in the treatment of people with epilepsy at AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine in Austin.
